Google Will Tell Customers If Personal Information Leaks On The Dark Web

JAKARTA - Online identity scams because stolen information through data breaches is an increasing problem that affects millions of people every year.

The stolen information is then widely sold or even shared for free on dark sites, parts of the hard-to-reach internet that require a dedicated browser to access it.

To combat the issue, starting next week, Google will begin rolling out capabilities for customers on all Google One plans in the US to tell whether your personal information is found on the dark web or not.

"This Google One dark site report can help you scan dark sites for your personal information such as name, address, email, phone number, and Social Security number and will notify you if information is found," Google wrote.

So, when activating a dark web report, you must provide and select what information you want to monitor in the monitoring profile. After that, if any suitable information is found on the dark web, Google will immediately notify you and provide guidance on how to protect that information.

"For example, if your Social Security number is found on the dark web, we may suggest that you report it as a stolen number to the government or take steps to protect your credit," the company continued.

In addition to this enhanced security feature, all Google One packages are equipped with enlarged cloud storage, editing features such as the Magic Deletion in Google Photos, and the availability of its VPN to all Google One subscribers in several countries such as Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, United States.
