JAKARTA - Instagram founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger are back with a breakthrough on the new social media app Artifact. Designed to provide feeds containing articles and facts.
Artifact will focus on news content from personalized and curated lists of publishers from top news outlets such as The New York Times and The Washington Post, to smaller special blogs.
In this application, Artifact is described as a newsreader who uses machine learning to personalize experiences for users, as well as add social elements where users can discuss articles they meet with friends.
When users click on certain news, the feed will automatically display articles, posts, and similar events that may appeal to them.
Currently, the app is not yet available to the public but offers a waiting list where interested users can sign up.
After registering, then the user will send a text containing a link to download and access the app. Once downloaded, the user will only have access to the central rating feed, but the Artifact beta test is underway for two additional features that are expected to be vital in the app.
According to The Verge, quoted Thursday, February 2, one of these features will display feed articles posted by users selected to follow and will include comments on the post.
The second feature is a live message inbox so that users can discuss shipments privately with friends.
This sounds like a modern touch to Google Reader, an old RSS newsreader app and was closed by the company in 2013.
The new app is not Systrom and Krieger's first attempt to return to technology since their departure from Instagram. The pair created the website Rt.live in 2020 to track the spread of COVID-19, as reported by Gizmodo.
Systrom menyatakan, dia dan Krieger telah membahas ide Artifact selama bertahun-tahun, tetapi dia tidak yakin apakah sistem pembelajaran mesin dapat meningkatkan rekomendasi konten kepada pengguna.
However, he said his experience on Instagram changed his perspective, making him believe that an accurate and customized feed would probably attract users more.
"Over the years, what I've seen is that every time we use machine learning to improve consumer experience, things get really good very quickly," said Systrom.
In addition, Artifact also took the TikTok algorithmic approach but now apply it to text applications only.
"I saw that change, and I was like, Oh, that's a social future," said Systrom.
Systrom added, only news outlets that comply with quality editorial standards will be allowed to continue using the app.
Artifact will also reportedly work to remove outlets and posts promoting misinformation and will conduct its own assessment of what's left on the platform.
