JAKARTA - The latest upcoming version of Android, Android 14 is rumored to be blocking the installation of certain outdated apps or old apps.

This capability was first discovered by 9to5google, which says that blocking outdated apps is meant to reduce the potential of scattered malware.

The existence of new capabilities on Android 14 doesn't seem surprising if you see Google has rolled out guidelines for the Google Play Store that require app development to update brand apps in order to use the latest features and security measures of the Android platform.

Just this month, Google even updated the guidelines, requiring newly registered Play Store app developers to target at least Android 12.

According to newly posted code changes, Android 14 is set to tighten API requirements, blocking full installation of outdated apps.

So, this change will block users from sideloading certain APK files and also block app stores from installing the same app.

By blocking this obsolete app, Google intends to stop the spread of malware apps on Android. Developers responsible for the changes note that some malware apps are deliberately targeting older versions of Android to bypass certain protections that are only applied to newer apps.

What needs to be known is, this policy may not completely prevent you from installing the old app, there's still a way to install the app via the command shell.
