JAKARTA Firefox browser developer Mozila Corporation recently announced its acquisition of a startup focused on web-based metaverse development, Active Replica.

Mozilla announced the acquisition of the Canadian-based startup in a blog post on Wednesday. The company highlighted Active Replica's contribution to Mozilla Hubs. Hubs is a platform for communities to build virtual spaces and host events.

"The magical and immersive experience built by Active Replica is very much in line with our world which is increasingly distributed and much first," wrote senior executive Mozilla Imo Udom.

The Active Replica team will continue their work at Mozilla Hubs, helping add new features to the Hubs engines.

"Together, we see this as a major opportunity to bring more innovation and creativity to the Hubs than we can do alone," wrote executive Mozilla.

The founders of Active Replica said they were very happy to join the Mozilla team. This acquisition will help advance their mission to allow people to connect virtually, they said.

"Mozilla has long advocated for healthier internet and has been an inspiration for us in its dedication and contribution to the open web," said Active Replica founder Jacob Ervin and Valerian Denis.

Mozilla also recently acquired Pulse, a startup behind an active status update for popular messaging platform Slack. The tool leverages machine learning (ML) technology and the Pulse team will build an ML solution for Mozilla.

The open-source Mozilla browser, which supports privacy, Firefox, is an option browser for many blockchain fans. Mozilla's commitment to open-source software, which is available to everyone to look at, use and change, is also popular among crypto natives. The Mozilla Foundation, a non-profit branch of Mozilla Corporation, is also one of the initial adopters in the field of crypto donations.

However, in January, Mozilla stopped accepting crypto donations in the form of Bitcoin and other proof-of-work tokens. The company cites concerns over the climate impact of such tokens. However, they said that they would continue to receive donations in proof-of-stake tokens.
