JAKARTA - Google brings its VPN access to desktop Thursday, November 10. Google One customers with Premium (2TB or higher) packages can now download VPN apps for Windows and macOS, which allow users in 22 countries to cover their IPs on desktop and reduce online trackers.
While Google is expanding its VPN service, there are still the same limits as Android and iOS. You can only use services in one of the supported countries, and you won't be able to use Google's VPN freely to avoid geographical restrictions on live sports broadcasts or other video streaming.
Just like Apple's iCloud Plus VPN service, Google One VPN won't allow you to manually set IP addresses from other countries. Instead, Google gives you IP in the region you connect to.
Beyond the security and privacy benefits, you pretend to be in another country to beat a annoying block of content is one of the most popular cases of VPN use, so it's disappointing if Google still doesn't support this.
Google initially started offering VPN access to Google One 2TB cloud storage customers in the US in 2020 as a free addition to existing 9.99 dollars/month plans. Since then it has expanded to 22 markets, including Mexico, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy. Google has also recently included this VPN service with the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro.
