JAKARTA - Nikolai Mushegian, co-founder of the decentralized cryptocurrency loan platform MakerDAO and Dai stablecoin, was found dead in Puerto Rico last week.

According to a local newspaper report by El Nuevo D way, Mushegian died of drowning after being swept away by ocean currents on Condado beach in San Juan. Mushegian had no signs of violence and vitals when his body was rescued.

Condado Beach is considered one of the most dangerous places in the world for swimmers, for reportedly claiming the lives of at least eight people in 2021.

The unfortunate incident was reported to local authorities in the morning, October 28. According to police reports, Mushegian is a resident of San Juan. The incident was reported and investigated by the San Juan Murder Division and local prosecutors.

Mushegian is an important figure in the cryptocurrency community. He contributed to several industrial projects, with some calling them "Dai architecture." The 29-year-old crypto developer is known for his work with MakerDAO fork Rico and Rai, as well as a blockchain network proof of BitShares ownership. Mushegian is also one of the founders of the automated market maker Balancer.

MakerDAO founder and CEO, Rune Christensen, said on Twitter on October 31 that Mushegian was contributing to the important input for the development of Makers and had been doing some important work since the early days of Ethereum.

Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson wrote on Twitter that he had known Mushegian since the BitShares era. "He is a very young and very intelligent man who has a very broad interest in game theory to Urbit," Hoskinson said, quoted by Cointelegraph. He added that as a codemaker, Mushegian has a deep understanding of technology.

Tether co-creator Craig Sellars noted that Mushegian's death occurred just days after the MakerDAO community voted to approve USD 1.6 billion in custody at USD Coin.

Mushegian is a community member who is active on social media. His Twitter account, Delete_shitcoin, has about 5,500 followers at the time of writing.

His last tweet was published just hours before his death, which refers to alleged extortion from the United States and Mossad Central Intelligence Agency. Mushegian previously made a similar statement on Twitter, hinting at the CIA's potential "suicide" as one of its future possibilities.
