JAKARTA - Years of the internet filled with trolls or troublemakers online who often send harsh messages, incite and attack. Now, Instagram will dispel trolls that annoy their users.
With a series of new security features on iOS and Android, Instagram intends to protect its users from trolls. One of the features launched is the platform blocking system.
Where users can now block all accounts owned by one person or troll. In short, if users block someone on Instagram, they will also have the option to block other accounts that the person may already have.
The option will make it difficult for trolls to annoy other users. Based on preliminary test results, Instagram estimates this change will result in four million accounts being automatically blocked every week.
"Based on the initial test results of these new changes, we hope Instagram will need to block approximately four million accounts every week, because this account will be blocked automatically," Instagram said in its official blog quoted on Friday, October 21.
Furthermore, Instagram also launched an update for a hidden word detection tool to filter DM requests and comments containing words, offensive phrases and emojis.
Meta's social media has also stepped up filtering to catch intentional spelling errors from offensive or abusive terms and this feature is also expanded to include replies in unwanted Stories. The update was designed to protect content creators from harassment.
Now, when a user tries to send a DM request to a content creator, Instagram will display a message at the bottom of the chat that reminds users to behave well. However, this feature only applies to content creators and community leaders.
Comment alerts are now also available, where users will get a new notification that makes them pause for a moment and consider how they want to respond before replying to a marked comment alluding to the Instagram system.
Instagram says the feature is now active for people whose Instagram apps use English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Chinese, or Arabic.
