According to a Wall Street Journal report, the cuts are thought to affect less than 1 percent of its 180,000 workers worldwide in Microsoft's business.
"Like all companies, we evaluate our business priorities regularly, and make appropriate structural adjustments. We will continue to invest in our business and employ in the main growth area next year," Microsoft told ABC News, Wednesday, October 19.
Microsoft's move comes amid a slowdown in growth in the technology sector and other global pressures. Microsoft shares fell by about 30 percent this year.
Earlier in July, the company also announced plans to cut employees' salaries by about one percent. However, it is not yet clear whether the dismissal of employees this week is part of the continuation of the pay cut, or a new phase.
