JAKARTA - Two well-known Japanese automakers, Nissan and Honda, have stated the steps the company will take to increase the production of electric vehicle batteries (EVs).
Launching a report from Kyodo, in an effort to accelerate EV development, Nissan Motor Co said it would acquire one of its main battery suppliers, Vehicle Energy Japan Inc.
According to Nissan, Vehicle Energy Japan has an integrated production system from battery to packaging cells, and advanced battery management system technology.
The company is also developing, producing, and selling lithium-ion batteries, battery modules, and battery management systems for hybrid vehicles that are expected to be growth areas.
Nissan, in his long-term vision, Nissan Ambition 2030, aims to create significant value by placing electrification as the core of its business strategy.
On the other hand, Honda Motor Co. said its Chinese unit would form a joint venture later this month with local automakers to jointly acquire EV batteries.
The company said the joint venture would be set up in Beijing later this month with Dongfeng Motor Corp and Guangzhou Automobile Group Co for EV battery procurement.
The Japanese automaker said it would strengthen its partnership with Chinese car battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., commonly known as CATL to strengthen its battery supply chain.
