JAKARTA - Amazon and Alphabet units Google criticized changes to Microsoft's cloud computing system on Tuesday, August 30, saying it was limiting competition and preventing customers from switching to rival cloud service providers.

The US software giant on Monday, August 29 announced a changed licensing deal and other changes that will take effect on October 1 and they say it will make it easier for cloud service providers to compete.

Amazon, Google, Alibaba and Microsoft cloud services themselves will be removed from the deal.

The Microsoft move comes after smaller EU competitors submit their complaints about cloud service practices to EU antitrust regulators, who then questioned market participants about the issue and what impact they experienced.

Amazon, a leading cloud service provider followed by Microsoft and Google, criticized it scathingly.

"Microsoft is now doubling the same malicious practice by implementing more restrictions in unfair efforts to limit its competition, rather than listening to its customers and restoring a fair software license in the cloud for everyone," a spokesman for cloud service unit AWS said in an email.

Google's vice president for government affairs and policies of Google Cloud, Marcus Jadotte, is also equally critical.

The cloud promise is flexible and elastic computing without contractual lockdown, he said in a tweet. "Customers should be able to move freely across platforms and choose the most suitable technology for them, rather than the most suitable for Microsoft," added Jadotte.
