Singapore Government Will Legalize Marriage On Metaverse

JAKARTA – The increasing popularity of the metaverse since Facebook rebranded the company and changed its name to Meta, the metaverse has begun to be loved by various groups including leading companies and even countries.

Recently, the Singapore government is rumored to be legalizing marriages that take place in the metaverse. Singapore will also present government services in the virtual world.

Singapore is one of the countries interested in the development of metaverse technology. Previously, the South Korean government had poured funds for the development of the domestic metaverse which was considered to have the potential to open up new job opportunities for the community.

Singapore's Second Minister of Law, Edwin Tong, explained at TechLaw Fest 2022 that very private aspects of a citizen's life, such as wedding ceremonies, along with other government legal services, are possible on the Metaverse.

“The pandemic has shown us that even dispute resolution — once seen as a physical process… can also be held almost entirely online," Tong said, quoted by DailyCoin.

Tong highlighted how augmented reality (AR) technology can be used to examine legal disputes involving, for example, an accident on a building site in three dimensions.

"You can put yourself into an actual tunnel or an oil storage facility to see construction disputes from an augmented reality perspective, which represents actual space," he added.

According to Tong, the incorporation of such technologies will in no way prevent conventional means of such services, as "there is always a hybrid element". Furthermore, he believes that the integrated platform will make the dispute resolution process more convenient and efficient as a whole, and will be in tune with the world's technological developments.

In this case, Singapore will join the list of countries that have adopted metaverse technology for the development of a government system, as did South Korea and the United Arab Emirates. The UAE is currently developing a digital hospital in the metaverse, which is scheduled to open in October.
