JAKARTA – In the midst of the Russo-Ukrainian war and the threat of US dollar inflation, Iran is said to be capable of producing a nuclear bomb but so far there has been no political decision to do so.

"Within a few days we can enrich uranium up to 60% and we can easily produce 90% enriched uranium," said Kamal Kharrazi, a senior adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Reporting from Russia Today, Iran has the technical means to produce nuclear bombs but there has been no decision from Iran to build them. The statement on Iran's ability to produce a nuclear bomb came after US President Joe Biden said Washington would do everything possible to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

This is because Biden made this promise during his visit to Israel this week. At that time, President Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid signed a joint declaration of continued strategic cooperation between the two sides.

One of the contents of the US agreement with Israel, among others, reads: "will never allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons." Accordingly, the US government is "ready to use all elements of its national power to ensure that outcome," according to the declaration.

On the other hand, Iran, which has long refrained from developing nuclear weapons, has begun to accelerate its development of nuclear weapons in recent years.

Previously, Donald Trump as US president at the time and his allies had negotiated with Iran to revive the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). At that time Iran was considered obedient to suspend the development of nuclear weapons.

But in May 2018, Trump withdrew from the JCPOA which was founded in 2015. After that, the JCPOA fell apart. Efforts to revive the Iran nuclear deal have so far been fruitless.

For information, the JCPOA is an Iranian nuclear agreement aimed at overcoming the problem of Iran's nuclear possession. A number of countries that belong to the UN Security Council are involved in the deal, including the United States, Russia, China, France, Britain and Iran.
