JAKARTA - Twitter announced a new feature called Product Drop, to make shopping easier for users through its platform. The feature aims to remind users of drop day, which is basically a new product launch day by a brand.

When a brand tweets about an upcoming launch, users will see a "Remind me" button at the bottom of the tweet. With just one tap, users can request to be reminded when a product hits the market.

On launch day, they will get an in-app notification 15 minutes before and at launch. Like other Twitter shopping features, the app won't handle the transaction, it just redirects the user to the retailer's or brand's site.

With the Product Drop feature, Twitter users can be one of the first to shop on a brand's website and beat the competition. They will also see a Shopping button on the website to purchase items on the brand's website.

Clicking on a brand's tweet will open the product detail page. This page will have all the information needed to make an informed buying decision.

Details like price, image, product description, and clickable twitter hashtags show what other shoppers are saying about the product.

Initially, the Product Drop feature will only be available in the United States (US) for people using the Twitter app in English. However, it is not known for sure whether the company will release the feature globally.

The first brands to get this feature include Dior, Home Depot, and Fossil's collaboration with designer Jeff Staple.

Compared to its social media competitors, Twitter is quite late in bringing e-commerce features to its app, although the company has said it sees the area as a significant opportunity.

Lastly, Twitter is also experimenting with shopping on live streams and allowing retailers to create in-app storefronts on their profiles. This was quoted from Engadget, Thursday, June 9.
