JAKARTA - European Union countries and EU lawmakers will agree on a common charging port for phones, tablets, and headphones on June 7 when they meet to discuss this proposal. While this one-port policy using USB-C has been heavily criticized by Apple.

The proposal for a single phone charging port was first floated by the European Commission more than a decade ago after iPhone and Android users complained about having to use different chargers for their phones.

The first, Apple, is charged from a Lightning cable while Android-based devices are powered using a USB-C connector.

Next Tuesday, Trilog will be the second and possibly the last between EU countries and EU lawmakers on the topic. This is an indication of a strong push to complete the deal.

According to a Reuters report, other salient issues, including expanding the scope of the proposal for laptops, are key requests by EU lawmakers that are likely to impact Samsung and Huawei, and other device makers, the people said.

EU lawmakers also want to include wireless charging systems for alignment by 2025 while EU states and the Commission want a longer preliminary period for technical reasons.

Apple is available for comment on this matter. Previously they said that inappropriately using outdated international standards stifled innovation and forced users to replace new chargers, creating a heap of electronic waste.
