JAKARTA - A Russian law firm on Friday, April 29, said it had filed a lawsuit against US tech giant Apple. They are seeking compensation of 90 million rubles in damages for consumers affected by Apple for withdrawing its payment services from Russia.

Law firm Chernyshov, Lukoyanov & Partners said Apple had violated the rights of Russian consumers after the company restricted the use of its built-in Apple Pay service on March 1 in response to Moscow's dispatch of troops to Ukraine. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the allegations.

The lawsuit, which it says has been filed in a Moscow court, demands 90 million rubles in damages, including compensation for the "moral damage" suffered by Russian citizens. They also want Apple to continue operating its Apple Pay service for Russian users.

The total could increase as law firms are still inviting more plaintiffs to join the lawsuit.

Senior Partner Konstantin Lukoyanov said Apple's main US company had decided to suspend sales of Apple products and limit the services offered in Russia.

"Therefore, our lawsuit is aimed first at the parent company and second at the subsidiary units", he said in his statement.

The law firm said Apple's decision to discontinue its Apple Pay service in Russia had reduced the functionality of its devices sold in the local market, thereby lowering their value, an act it said was unfair and discriminatory under Russian law.

The same law firm is filing a similar lawsuit against streaming company Netflix, which in March suspended its service in Russia.
