JAKARTA - Twitter has a new policy regarding climate change advertisements that are contrary to science. This has been the highlight of the application with the bird logo since Earth Day recently.

"We believe that climate denial should not be monetized on Twitter, and misleading advertising should not detract from important conversations about the climate crisis," Twitter said in a statement.

With this policy, Twitter will filter content related to the climate crisis by involving authoritative sources, such as the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Recently the IPCC published several important reports on the climate crisis. The content is about what needs to be done to adapt to the changes that are already taking place.

Including how to prevent more severe consequences in the future, such as focusing on dealing with weather disasters and periods of forest fires.

Twitter said they would soon announce details about the policies already mentioned regarding climate ads.

According to Twitter, conversations about climate change have spiked over the past year, and are growing by more than 150 percent since 2021.

Conversations and discussions about decarbonization, aka eliminating greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels, rose 50 percent on Twitter during that time.

In fact, other environmental conversations are heating up as well, such as waste reduction growing by more than 100 percent over the same time period.

Twitter isn't alone in preventing misleading ads about climate change, technology companies like Google have made similar commitments and have had success.

In October 2021, Google issued a policy to stop serving ads that display climate disapproval or that monetize climate misinformation.

However, a report says Google has still allowed ads that contradict the climate crisis since the policy was implemented.
