JAKARTA - Major developer platform GitHub has reportedly blocked more than a dozen Russian developer accounts associated with organizations approved to be blocked by the United States government.
The sanctioned accounts included some of Russia's largest banks, Sberbank and Alfa-Bank, along with individual developers with links to the sanctioned companies. However, many individual accounts with no links or ties to the sanctioned companies were also blocked in the process.
Researcher Sergey Bobrov, who reportedly has no current link to such a company, claimed on April 15 that his account was suspended and later reinstated.
Another developer, Vadim Yanitskiy, also complained about the same thing. “My @github account has been suspended without prior notice. Maybe because I'm ethnic Russian. 'GitHub's vision is to be a home for all developers, no matter where they live,' said Yanistskiy, as quoted by Cointelegraph.
GitHub is a popular software development platform used to store, track and collaborate on software projects. It allows developers to upload their own code files and collaborate with fellow developers on open source projects. GitHub, has become a core part of the crypto ecosystem due to its open-source nature.
According to initial reports, most of the companies and developers facing the suspension belong to private Russian banks. However, no crypto companies or developers were affected.
