JAKARTA - Google has finally joined forces with Apple and Samsung in allowing users to repair their own smartphones. The program is scheduled to run at the end of this year.

However, this policy will only be available in countries where the Google Pixel is sold and will partner with iFixit.

Unlike Apple and Samsung, Google says it will make the program available for older Pixel phones, namely the Pixel 2 to the latest Pixel 6 Pro.

“Starting later this year, genuine Pixel parts will be available for purchase on ifixit.com for Pixel 2 through Pixel 6 Pro, as well as future Pixel models, in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and EU countries where Pixel is located. . available," said Google's Chief Operating Officer, Consumer Hardware, Ana Corrales.

“The full range of parts for general Pixel phone repair, things like batteries, replacement screens, cameras, and more will be available either individually or in iFixit Fix Kits, which include tools like screwdriver bits and spudgers.”

Launching Digital Trends, Saturday, April 9, iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens stated that this program also aims to build a sustainable electronics industry, consumers should have the option to improve their own products.

"Google is making repairs more affordable and accessible, even in places without a repair shop. We're committed to enabling repairs where and when you choose," says Wiens.

As smartphones get more sophisticated, most of them are now made of the typical glass and metal. While elegant to look at and hold, they are often prone to breakage.

In fact, a cracked screen is one of the reasons people often replace their cellphones, in addition to a battery with a depleting capacity, or even a broken camera.

While there are services like Applecare that allow phones to be repaired for a fee, many find it easier to disassemble and repair their own phones.

Not only will it be cheaper to repair the phone yourself, they will also be knowledgeable, but it will also keep the phone in use and out of the landfill longer.

Users no longer need to throw away the Pixel 2XL with a bad battery and a broken screen. Now users can buy new batteries and screens, then disassemble them, and do whatever they want with them.

In addition to the new repair program, Google also reiterated its promise of five-year security updates for Pixel 6 and newer, and emphasized that all Google hardware will be made from recycled materials to some degree going forward.
