Google Has The Heart To Remove Chrome Features That Have Been Helping Users Save Data

JAKARTA - Google announced later on with the release of Chrome M100 that it will no longer carry the Chrome Lite Mode feature that has helped users reduce their mobile data usage for years.

According to reports, Chrome Lite Mode will disappear with the release of Chrome version M100 in late March. Initially, this mode was known as Data Saver when Google first introduced it on Android in 2014.

At that time, many smartphone owners used data plans that were not unlimited and would incur additional fees if they exceeded their monthly allotment.

Even in some regions, mobile speed is also limited, so Lite mode helps to load pages faster by compressing them. In 2015, Google added an option to block images completely for the sake of consuming less data.

However, Google no longer sees much reason to keep those options and features. Because currently, mobile operators are already providing cheaper unlimited data plans, and the company claims that Chrome continues to reduce data usage with the default settings.

"In recent years, we've seen a drop in costs for mobile data in many countries, and we've delivered many improvements to Chrome to further minimize data usage and improve web page loading," explains Google.

"While Lite mode will be discontinued, we remain committed to ensuring Chrome can provide a fast web page loading experience on mobile."

Chrome for Android version M100 will be released to the stable channel on March 29, so Lite mode will remain available until then. This was quoted by The Verge from 9to5Google, Thursday, February 24.
