Che Cupumanik: Vocal Nayl Makes Smells Like Teen Spirit A Hybrid Secret Between Grunge And Heavy Metal

JAKARTA - The appearance of Nayl Author at Indonesian Idol 2023 has again gone viral on social media. This happened thanks to his action of bringing Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit last week.

However, unfortunately, Nayl's appearance at Spectcular Show 7, received a different response from some of the judges. The singer from Bandung was criticized by Maia Estianty because her voice was considered not optimal.

"Sori, tonight you just need to pass Nayl. You have to learn in your low notes to stabilize even more. Because I think this song can be brought even more beautiful," said Maia.

"You have to learn more from your idol, Steven Tyler (Aerosmith, Red)," continued Maia.

David Bayu, another Indonesian Idol judge, then denied the comments of the former Maia duo personnel.

"Talking about beautiful grunge, how?" asked David.

"Entering Indonesian Idol performing Nirvana's songs is rare. I'm just expressive with the stage act (Nayl) which is crazy. vocally, it's also not just grunge, but combined with heavy metal. Why am I standing alone? Because his appearance is cool tonight," he added.

"Even though the vocals are just right, but what can I do with the name grunge singing," he said.

Seeing this incident, VOI took the initiative to ask for a response from one of the grunge music actors in the country, Che from Cupumanik.

Che said that what Maia meant to perform the grunge song beautifully was possible by singing close to Nirvana's vocalist, Kurt Cobain.

"Maia actually hopes that Nayl can sing the song Smells Like Teen Spirit even more beautiful than that. Beautiful Grunge according to Maia, maybe the one who can sing close to Kurt Cobain with a rusty voice, not in a high-pitched tone like Steven Tyler," Che explained.

But, he added, the vocal character of Nayl, who has a wide range of tone, actually makes this song feel fresher.

"The composition of the music is cool, opening a song with a grunge-style gloomy feel, and the dark opening composition and arrangement are in contrast to the original song, which was already aggressive from the start," he continued.

"The dark nuances were felt at the beginning, then the tension rose until the climax at the end of the song. Stop and go dynamic. Only the vocal character of Nayl is more suitable for heavy metal vocals. His voice is high, while the grunge character is gloomy, dirty, and rude," he added.

"But, Nayl has a high vocal tone cruising ability, that's his advantage. And positively, the song Smells Like Teen Spirit is like a new creature, a hybrid creature between grunge and heavy metal," he concluded.

Unfortunately, in the Spectacular Show round, Monday night, Nayl, who performed the ST12 song, Search for Dating Again, had to be eliminated.
