JAKARTA - The Super Mario game, which has been the talk of the town, finally comes in the story format. A film from the Illumination collaboration with Universal Pictures and Nintendo produced The Super Mario Bros Movie that was awaited.

This ambitious project is voiced by high-end actors and actresses, Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor Joy, Seth Rogen, Jack Black and many others. But interestingly The Super Mario Bros. was not the first adaptation.

In 1993, Nintendo made the live action film Super Mario Bros. which ended in failure. As a result, it took them a long time to finally re-develop Mario and Luigi's story.

On the other hand, the existence of The Super Mario Bros. was not immediately accepted. Since the beginning, a row of voice actors was announced, the public has questioned their capabilities in presenting these iconic characters. Does The Super Mario Bros. meet public expectations?

The Super Mario Bros. started with Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day), two brothers who worked as roadmen and lived in Brooklyn. Every day they receive jobs repairing pipes from neighbors' homes.

One time, Mario saw the news of an underground water pipe leak that caused Brooklyn to flood. Together with Luigi, they wanted to repair the pipe, but they were accidentally sucked into a mysterious pipe and caused them to separate.

Luigi arrived in Dark Land, an area that was scary and full ofars while Mario arrived at the Munci Kingdom. Mario also found Luigi threatened so he asked Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) to save Luigi from Bowser's snare (Jack Black).

The Super Mario Bros. looks interesting starting from the theme of a song that is familiar to the details of the game which of course reminds the audience of the game.

In a plot, the Super Mario Bros story can be predicted, namely the action of saving Luigi and Mario's adventures with Princess Peach and Toad. The story adapts to the game which makes the story story familiar.

Because of this respect, the character is made one-dimensional and does not develop. The persistent Mario, the brave Princess Peach, and the coward Luigi made his character not experience a big conflict. You could say the writer chose a safe line in his story but it was still acceptable.

The references presented in The Super Mario Bros. also follow the original material. For example, Bowser's fiery figure in the film is part of Bowser's Fury's game, or when Mario rides a go-kart like his game.

Nostalgia is also felt through the selection of songs that accompany the film such as the Thunderstruck from AC/DC or Aha's Take on Me which adds to the splendor of The Super Mario Bros.

Unexpectedly, even though The Super Mario Bros. has a simple premise, the execution can be enjoyed well. Visuals supported by a row of voice actors who successfully brought the character to life add interesting points to this film.

The Super Mario Bros. film can be watched in all Indonesian cinema networks starting April 5, 2023.
