Review Of Hero Film: The First Musical Of South Korea That Has Many Stories Layers

JAKARTA - Hero's film is among the hectic action genres in the South Korean film industry. This film is an adaptation of the story of Ahn Joong Geun, a Korean activist in the early 20th century. The film was directed by Yoon Je Kyun who was successful with Ode to My Father (2014).

Hero is produced as a form of commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Ahn Joong Geun's struggle for Korean independence. In musical format, Jung Sung Hwa also starred in the character Ahn Jung Geun in his film format.

Hero is a musical film inspired by the musical stage of the same name. The story focuses on the true story of Ahn Joong Geun, an independent activist who fights for Korean independence. He was willing to leave his mother and family to carry out the mission.

The character Ahn Joong Geun (Jung Sung Hwa) is fighting for Korean independence. On the other hand, there is Seol Hee (Kim Go Eun) who once worked for Queen Myseongseong who died from Japanese attacks. Then Seol Hee helped by becoming a geisha and being an informant for Korean media.

Ahn Joong Geun as the leader of the action in the pursuit of the Japanese side made Joong Geun plan to get rid of Ito Hirobumi, the General of Japan.

This film performs uniquely, not only bringing up historical stories, its stories are often told musically. The character's point of view is the main point used to display its musical number.

Yoon Je Kyun is smart enough to open a film with musical scenes. A firm statement from the main character with a grande song makes the audience not turn away from the cinema screen. In addition, plus points come from the line of actors who are used to playing musicals so that they can combine acting with slick music.

The use of the point of view as a musical number is felt through the character Seol Hee (Kim Go Eun). Her appearance as a geosha who left South Korea became a melancholic side of several parts of the film.

Jung Sung Hwa's acting with Park Jin Joo, Kim Go Eun, Jo Jae Yoon, Lee Hyun Woo, Bae Jung Nam also deserves appreciation.

However, Hero's film has a layered story layer so the duration is certainly long. Not only that, the transfer from one story to another feels jumpy. On the one hand, we see a touching appearance of Seol Hee and then the comedy side comes.

Because of the jumpy, there are some unresolved parts that even leave questions. Likewise, the comedy element is quite a lot inserted in films.

Apart from that, Hero became a unique, dramatic, as well as amazing historical musical. The combination of epic stories with musicals feels fun and touching. The emotional character presented was also felt in seeing Korean history to make its independence.
