JAKARTA - South Korean film industry's accumulative revenue this year has reportedly surpassed 1 trillion won for the first time after struggling to survive the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Citing The Korea Herald which was broadcast on Sunday, December 18 local time, the Korean Film Council recorded details of total revenue from January to November of 1.26 trillion won or around Rp. 15 trillion. That figure is up 100.5 percent or up 502.5 billion won compared to last year.
The increase in revenue was largely driven by a number of films released targeting moviegoers during the summer and the Chuseok holiday season.
The sequel to the action of The Roundup, which was launched last May, is the first contributor to the increase in South Korean film industry revenue with an accumulation of 12.6 million tickets.
Then, followed by the film Confidential Assignment 2: International which contributed to ticket sales of 6 million, Hansan: Rising Dragon contributed sales of 7 million tickets, and Top Gun: Maverick contributed sales of more than 8 million tickets.
Meanwhile, if viewed from the audience side, there were a total of 98.6 million people visiting South Korean cinemas in the last 11 months, an increase of 89.6 percent compared to the same period last year.
Last year, cinema tickets sold only reached 46.6 million or only 48.3 percent compared to the pre-pandemic period in 2019.
Quoted from ANTARA, specifically for Korean films, the accumulated revenue reached 578 billion won (Rp 6.9 trillion) from January to November, an increase of 254.7 percent from last year.
In November alone, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever became a popular film that earned a gross revenue of 21.5 billion won (Rp258 billion), followed by the films The Night Owl and Decible. Among the indie works, American action films Everything Where All At Once managed to pocket 170 million won (Rp2 billion) in the South Korean market.
