JAKARTA - The success of the Extraordinary Attorney Woo series has convinced Netflix to produce a second season. Thanks to its humanistic story and engaging characters, the series' viewer ratings jumped to 15.8 percent on July 27 and have hovered around 13-15 percent since then.
The series also topped the weekly viewership chart for Netflix's non-English TV show category for the third week in a row.
Extraordinary Attorney Woo is rumored to be continuing for a second season with a possible release in 2024. However, the production team said it is still in talks with television channel ENA regarding production of a second season.
Before continuing season 2, the drama will be adapted into a musical drama show in 2024, according to a statement from the production company EMK Musical, Wednesday, August 17.
EMK said it recently signed an agreement with AIMC, AStory's production subsidiary, to create a new musical theater piece based on the series.
"We will choose three episodes of the original drama to produce three different musicals," EMK said as quoted by The Korea Times on Thursday, August 18.
According to EMK CEO Um Hong-hyun, usually many parties offer their drama series or films to be made into musical performances, but EMK is not sure that they can maintain the charm of the original work after condensing the story.
“But in the case of 'Extraordinary Attorney Woo', each episode has one quality story. So we thought we'd be able to develop each of those episodes on stage," said Um.
AStory CEO Lee Sang-baek said that his party welcomes EMK's cooperation. He believes in a smooth cooperation considering that EMK is the company behind the success of several productions such as “Mata Hari”, “The Man Who Laughs”, and “Frida”.
"Working with EMK, we will not waste efforts to produce new Korean content that can win the hearts of people around the world," said Lee.
Extraordinary Attorney Woo tells the story of a character named Woo Young-woo (played by Park Eun-bin) who works as a lawyer. Despite being on the autism spectrum, he has a genius and is trying to maintain a career at a leading law firm.
