L’histoire est basée sur un livre du même nom de Diane Wynne Jones et est le deuxième livre que l’histoire a adapté après Howl’s Moving Castle.
Earwig and the Witch raconte l’histoire d’un enfant nommé Earwig qui vit dans un orphelinat depuis l’enfance. Un jour, une femme nommée Bella Yaga l’adopta.
Cependant Bella Yaga est une sorcière et Earwig doit trouver un moyen de survivre Bella Yaga.
Différent des autres films studio Ghibli, Earwig and the Witch sera disponible en format CG 3D. Initialement, ce film devait être projeté au Festival de Cannes, mais en raison de la pandémie COVID-19, ils ont choisi de le diffuser via la chaîne de télévision NHK.
