JAKARTA - The Crazy Rich Asians film which was released in 2018 will develop into a spin-off. Gemma Chan who plays Astrid will be the main star in the story.

Launching PEOPLE, the production house of Warner Bros. is developing a spin-off and focuses on the love story of Nick's (Henry Golding) cousins Astrid and Charlie Wu (Harry Shum Jr.).

This story has appeared in Kevin Kwan's second book China Rich Girlfriend. Charlie is Astrid's first love and they were engaged before they separated because Astrid's parents felt Charlie was not a suitable match.

Charlie himself had appeared in Crazy Rich Asians. He meets Astrid at Nick and Rachel's (Constance Wu) engagement.

As is known, in the film, Astrid is told to leave her husband, Michael (Pierre Png) after finding out that her husband is cheating on her. Director Jon M. Chu had revealed that Harry Shum Jr. not only appear in that one scene.

"They (Astrid and Charlie) danced together - and it was amazing but the thing is I don't want to make Astrid leave Michael for Charlie. We don't have much room to expand on the story,” said Jon M. Chu.

Therefore, in the first film, Astrid is portrayed as an independent character, not looking for love.

Reportedly, Jason Kim will be writing the script while Jon M. Chu has not been confirmed to direct the spin-off.

On the other hand, they are preparing a sequel to Crazy Rich Asians which is still being directed by M. Chu. The story will follow Rachel and Nick's journey to Shanghai to find Rachel's father.
