JAKARTA - The Korean drama, All of Us Are Dead has been praised as a new Squid Game since landing on Netflix for the first time on January 28. The series topped Netflix's list of the top 10 non-English language TV shows for the week of January 24 to 30 with 124.79 million viewing hours.

Meanwhile, according to data from streaming analytics company Flixpatrol, the 12-episode series has been at the top of Netflix's TV show for nine straight days since its debut.

All of Us Are Dead director, Lee Jae-kyo said the series he made was not only about zombies, but also depicted the condition of humans living from all walks of life. The series is based on a popular webtoon.

The story is set in a high school that turns into chaos due to the spread of a mysterious zombie virus. Here are 3 reasons why the director of All of Us are Dead is a true reflection of society.

School is a micro-cosm of society

“There is a saying that children are a reflection of their parents. It can be extended to another saying that schools are a mirror of society. I want to show this parallel image through students," said director Lee Jae-kyo or also known as Lee JQ, quoted from Yonhap.

He said he wanted to portray schools as a kind of micro-cosm of human society represented by various uniformed people, such as perpetrators and victims of bullying, rich and poor children, male and female principals.

Teens' decisions are different from adults

“To be honest, I don't enjoy zombie movies. But the original comic caught my attention because it depicted a zombie outbreak in a school. Unlike adults, immature students make different decisions in extreme situations," Lee said as quoted by ANTARA, February 8.

There is violence in schools

In addition to fighting zombies, All of Us Are Dead also raises the issue of school violence as another main theme. A mysterious zombie virus was developed by a teacher to help his son fight off school bullies.

Director Lee JQ is aware of the criticism that has surfaced regarding the portrait of school violence and the excessive use of profanity.

“Many people feel uncomfortable seeing bullying at school and want to distance themselves from it. But our society may not be much different from the school. We can become perpetrators or victims with or without realizing it," he said.

The All of Us Are Dead series is Lee's first small screen project in 10 years after he worked on the romance series The King 2 Hearts (2012). He said he was already thinking about the next All of Us Are Dead story, although a second season has yet to be confirmed.

"If the first season continues well for a longer time, the next season I think can be talked about," he said.
