JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) targets the construction of the Bener Dam in Bener District, Purworejo Regency, Central Java, to be completed by the end of 2024.

"Currently, the progress of Bener Dam's construction is already 26 percent and efforts are being made to accelerate the technical construction," said Acting Director General of Water Resources of the Ministry of PUPR Jarot Widyoko in his official statement, Monday, June 5.

Jarot said that the dam, which had been built since October 2018, had no significant problems in terms of technical and land. This is because land acquisition has reached 95 percent and is in the settlement stage.

Bener Dam is a multifunctional dam that has many benefits. Bener Dam has a capacity of around 92 million m3, which can later irrigate an irrigation area of 15,519 Ha.

"In addition, it can also supply raw water for household, city and industrial purposes of 1,500 liters per second to three districts, namely Purworejo, Kebumen and Kulon Progo, including YIA Airport," said Jarot.

The dam also has the potential to supply 10 MW of electrical energy and reduce the flood discharge from 584 m3/second to 178 m3/second (70 percent) in the flood discharge for 25 years (Q25). In addition, other functions such as fisheries, tourism, and conservation of the Bogowonto watershed in the upstream section.

"Pay attention to the aspects of quality and environmental sustainability. Please evaluate the engineering design and architecture, so that there is no overdesign. The work is neat, the remaining materials are well organized," he added.

The construction of the Bener dam is part of the construction of 61 dams from 2015 to 2025, which can later increase the number of water reservoirs built by the Ministry of PUPR in supporting food and water security in Central Java.
