JAKARTA - Secretary General of the Indonesian Transportation Society (MTI) Haris Muhammadun proposed a discount on toll rates as an incentive for travelers who want to leave early.

According to him, this can overcome congestion from the movement of people who go home simultaneously, during the 2023 Eid holiday season.

"Then, incentives for travelers who will go home early must be given at a cheaper rate, but the tariff increases when approaching the peak day," said Haris during a media discussion in Jakarta, Tuesday night, April 4.

This, said Haris, is based on predictions from the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) which projects that there will be 123 million movements of people in the Lebaran 2023 period, which of course has the potential to cause congestion on toll roads.

Moreover, he continued, the Lebaran period was synonymous with people who traveled to their hometowns or known as homecoming.

"This recommendation is expected to overcome the peak of 123.8 million people's movements, so they don't become chaos. So, we are both to voice this," he added.

Previously, the Ministry of PUPR stated that it was still waiting for initiatives from Toll Road Business Entities (BUJT) related to price discounts or toll rates, to support the smooth running of the 2023 Eid holiday.

"Not yet from the association. Usually, right, they (BUJT) are proposing discounts," said PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono to reporters after being met at the DPR RI Building, Jakarta, Tuesday, April 4.

Basuki said that the BUJTs are currently reviewing the plan to provide discounts on toll rates.

"It is being studied by BUJT to be able to apply because we cannot determine, later intervention, right, investment," he added.
