JAKARTA - Jambi Governor Al Haris revealed the cause of severe traffic jams for 22 hours that occurred on the Sumatran road because of the large number of coal truck activities.

The condition of the road that is flooded and badly damaged is also the cause of the road being paralyzed for 22 hours.

He explained that Perda number 13 of 2012 had been stated if the IUP owner was mandated to build a special road for coal transport vehicles, but it was not realized because of the relatively low price of coal.

"They (the IUP holders) started forming a consortium and the plan began but in the middle of the road because the price of coal was not cynical ended up not happening," Haris said in a Hearing Meeting with Commission V, Wednesday, March 29.

In fact, the regional regulation states that the construction of the special road will be completed by the end of 2024.

Then when the price of coal begins to soar in 2021, said Haris, IUP holders have no other choice but to use the 223 kilometer (km) Trembesi-Jambi national road to transport coal.

"Then there started to be traffic jams. At the beginning there was no traffic jams because the number was still limited, but as soon as the end of 2021 the price started quite well, there began to be enthusiasts who invested vehicles in Jambi," continued Haris.

He added that the transport vehicles did not only come from Jambi but also came from other areas such as Central Java, East Java, South Sumatra, and other areas and moved more than 12,000 transport trucks.

To overcome the congestion, Haris has coordinated with Ditlantas to regulate congestion and reactivate the weight bridge and use the hull number for vehicles to control vehicles crossing the national road.

However, in practice there are many illegal transport vehicles outside of registered coal transporters.

"It turns out that the hull number is also not orderly because the number of games is exploding every day, we can't handle it anymore, so there is traffic jams on the route," concluded Haris.
