Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said technology-based start-up companies could contribute to increasing national economic growth.

Currently, Indonesia is the country with the 6th largest start-up in the world with 2,506 start-ups consisting of 9 unicorns and 2 decacorns.

"Start ups play an important role in job creation, improving welfare and contributing to a sustainable economy through the innovations offered," Airlangga said at a press conference on the Economic Impact of the GoTo Ecosystem in Jakarta, quoted from Antara, Wednesday, March 29.

Southeast Asia's digital economy is expected to grow to 1 trillion US dollars by 2030 from the previous 174 billion US dollars in 2021.

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, new internet customers in the ASEAN region increased by 60 million people, the majority of which came from rural areas so that the digital economy became more inclusive.

Until now, the online population in Southeast Asia has reached 440 million people. This number will continue to increase and is a potential that can be utilized, as well as by Indonesia," he said.

Responding to the latest study by the LPEM FEB University of Indonesia, Airlangga said that 2022 was not an easy year because Indonesia was working hard to recover and rise after the pandemic for two years.

However, Indonesia can go through it toughly amid global economic uncertainty with GoTo being one of the companies that helped Indonesia during the recovery period.

"Through the LPEM FEB UI study, I appreciate GoTo's real contribution and impact on the national economy, especially in creating additional job opportunities through its MSME partner business, reducing poverty, and reducing income gaps," he said.

In the future, Airlangga believes GoTo will develop as Indonesia's digital economy is projected to grow to reach a value of 360 billion US dollars by 2030.

"I hope that GoTo can continue to provide product innovations and services that are useful for millions of driver-partners, MSME partners, and consumers in Indonesia and are consistently able to transform MSMEs into the digital ecosystem," he said.
