JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) revealed that the construction of mass transportation in DKI Jakarta has been delayed for about 30 years. This is one of the factors causing congestion that is currently happening in the capital city.

Jokowi said that traffic jams occurred because people had already chosen to use private vehicles for their daily activities.

"In Jakarta, it has been 30 years late, although now there is a MRT but only one route. There is an LRT but it's also not running yet. It's no wonder that in Jakarta in the morning there are traffic jams, bad afternoons, traffic jams at night now. Because of the delay in building (public transportation)," he said in a press conference quoted from the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube, Wednesday, March 29.

Jokowi said that the delay in public transportation development was not only in Jakarta, but also in other big cities. Thus, these areas also experience congestion.

"Everyone flocked using private vehicles, finally traffic jams in all cities now, not only in Jakarta. Jakarta, Bandung, Medan, Surabaya, Semarang in Makassar have all jammed because we are late in building public transportation," he explained.

Therefore, Jokowi appreciates the construction of the railway line in South Sulawesi. He said the government plans to build a Trans Sulawesi fire route.

"I am very happy and appreciate what we have started with the Trans Sulawesi railway line. Later, God willing, we will continue to connect from Makassar to the North in Manado. Although now it is only from Makassar to Pare-pare," he said.

The former governor of DKI Jakarta said that if later the train in Sulawesi had started a lot, it would not only be used for passenger transportation, but also for tourism to goods.

"This will provide competitiveness, the competitiveness of our country will be better, because goods are transported in cheap means of transportation," he said.
