JAKARTA - Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) Sakti Wahyu Trenggono regrets that fisheries productivity in Indonesia has not met the target, last year.

This can be seen from the contribution of the marine and fisheries sector to gross domestic product (GDP) which has not been as expected.

"Frankly, I am a little worried that the fisheries marine productivity is no less than 24 million tons of fish from the sea, from cultivation and then seaweed, but strangely the contribution to GDP is only 254 (percent) and the tax is only 266 percent," Trenggono said at the MSME Thrive Expo event at the KKP Building, Jakarta, Monday, March 6.

Regarding this, Trenggono was even questioned by the Minister of Finance (Menkeu) Sri Mulyani regarding what caused the contribution of the marine and fisheries sector which was not very significant to state revenues.

"When I met the minister of Finance, the minister of Finance was also like that, I told the data like this, this is what happened, whether the data was not recorded or what. Well, this is then the subject of my thoughts and also friends at the KKP," he said.

In fact, Trenggono continued, if as many as 25 million tons of fish can be sold for IDR 20,000 per kg, the income can reach IDR 500 trillion.

"Where does the money go? The money keeps going, but then what percentage of direct contribution to production actors in the marine fisheries sector. This has not been calculated properly and I think it will be our homework for then we will investigate it there," he said.

Trenggono assessed that there were problems with implementation in the fisheries and marine sectors which caused the contribution to state revenues to not be realized properly.

"Because we were wrong in the implementation, we were wrong, we didn't use the right norms or base practices," he concluded.

Based on KKP data, capture fisheries and cultivation production for the 2014-2022 period continues to increase.

In 2022, the fisheries sector's businesses will successfully contribute to state tax revenues of up to IDR 2.65 billion. The fisheries sector businesses consist of cultivation, industry, services, trade, and capture.

The fishery industry sector contributed the most to state revenue, reaching around Rp1 billion, in 2022.
