JAKARTA - The government encourages the use of environmentally friendly energy through the use of electric vehicles. Previously, the government targeted the use of electric motorcycles to reach 13 million motorcycles and 2 million electric cars by 2030.

Responding to this, IESR Executive Director and Energy observer, Fabby Tumiwa said this target would be difficult to achieve because the share of the electric vehicle market in Indonesia is still very low.

"Based on IESR data, sales of two-wheeled electric vehicles in Indonesia have increased by 260 percent since the beginning of 2020, while sales of 4-wheeled vehicles have reached 480 percent in Indonesia. However, the market share of electric vehicles in Indonesia only reaches 1 percent of the number of electric vehicles every year," said Fabby to VOI, Tuesday, February 21.

However, Fabby sees the potential to grow, especially for two-wheeled vehicles, because the current price of electric motors is almost equal to the price of conventional motorcycles. Moreover, plus the incentives provided by the government, the number of buyers of electric motorcycles will also certainly continue to grow.

"The community will benefit more from the economy with incentives because it is also beneficial for fuel savings, so this makes people more interested in electric vehicles," added Fabby.

The second factor that can encourage the growth of electric motorcycles in Indonesia is that the increasing number of electric motorcycle models circulating in the community will attract people to own electric motorcycles.

"In the past 2-3 years, the models in circulation were limited, now there have started a lot. It's almost 20 models," he continued.

In addition to increasingly diverse models, he continued, companies that produce electric motors are also developing new features and improving the performance and performance of women's motorcycles.

The third factor, he continued, is the lifestyle of urban people who have started to become aware of the environment so that they can encourage the ownership of electric motorcycles in the community.

Unlike electric motorcycles, Fabby said the obstacle to ownership of electric cars is because the price is still quite high, so it will be increasingly difficult for people to own electric cars.

"If we look at the price of the car purchased by 80 percent of the purchase of the car, the price is below IDR 400 million, while 250-400 range costs. There is no price for a good quality electric car that is priced at this range," continued Fabby.

For this reason, according to Fabby, by looking at the purchase of electric cars over the last 2 years, he assessed that it would be difficult to achieve the target of 2 million electric cars by 2030. However, with the reduction of battery fire and the increasing production of electric cars, he is sure that the price of cars will be more affordable by the public.

"As production increases, battery prices fall, maybe in the next 4-5 years the lower class cars can circulate, then we will see that the penetration of electric vehicles can be higher," concluded Fabby.
