JAKARTA The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) stated that Indonesia's inflation based on the consumer price index (CPI) at the end of December 2022 was 5.51 percent year on year (yoy).

Head of BPS Margo Yuwono said this annual inflation (yoy) is also inflation for the calendar year throughout 2022 (January-December).

"So year on year inflation in December is the same as year to date (ytd)," he said when holding a press conference on Monday, January 2.

Margo explained that the main contributors to monthly inflation include rice commodities, PAM drinking water tariffs, and broiler eggs with a share of 0.07 percent, 0.07 percent, and 0.06 percent, respectively.

"The contributors to annual inflation include gasoline at 1.15 percent, household fuel at 0.30 percent, and air transportation at 0.27 percent," he continued.

Margo added that the monthly to lunar inflation rate (month to month/mtm) was 0.66 percent.

Of the 90 cities monitored, the highest inflation is in the city of Bandung with a rate of 2.04 percent. Meanwhile, the lowest inflation is in Sorong City which is 0.01 percent," he said.

Margo emphasized that the high inflation rate in December was quite affected by seasonal factors, namely the Christmas and New Year holidays.

"In that period there was an increase in demand from the public because of school children's holidays and year-end holidays," he said.

For information, at the beginning of the year the government targeted inflation in 2022 to be 3 percent plus minus 1 percent. However, this figure has widened due to disruptions in terms of world commodity supply due to geopolitical factors in Ukraine that have made inflation soar.

Meanwhile, inflation based on the consumer price index in November 2022 is 5.42 percent yoy, or lower than December 2022.
