Best Throughout History, PLN Achieves 15 Gold Proper Awards And CEO Of Green Leadership Utama

PT PLN (Persero) made history by winning 15 awards for the 2022 Companion Performance Assessment Program (Proper) organized by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK).

The award is given to several power plants owned by PLN because they have implemented good environmental governance and made various efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) and non-GRK emissions, resource efficiency both in energy, water use and reuse, reduce, recycle (3R) waste and also carry out efforts to conserve ecosystems both land and sea and carry out sustainable community empowerment in accordance with the principles of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and also Good Corporate Governance (GCG).

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo also received an award as CEO of Green Leadership Utama.

The award was given directly by the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, Ma'ruf Amin to the company that has implemented the Social Future Fit Society.

Ma'ruf Amin appreciated the company's leadership who was elected CEO of Green Leadership Utama, as well as the company that won the Gold Proper because it managed to manage the sustainable environment. Ma'ruf said active participation in the business world is needed in concrete actions to overcome climate change and manage the sustainable environment.

"I congratulate the company that receives the Proper Award, especially the EMAS rankings, and the CEOs who received the Green Leadership award. The performance of the company, brothers and sisters, has proven to be at the forefront of environmental management," said the Vice President.

The Vice President hopes that the success of the Award Proper Program can be followed by other programs that continue to involve all components more broadly.

He also encouraged various innovations and achievements of the company by prioritizing its concrete impact on the environment to be maintained and maintained.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Environment and Forestry, Siti Nurbaya Bakar, said that this year there was an increase in variables in the Proper's assessment, namely in the framework of Green Leadership.

The Green Leadership factor is considered very important because the motivation for consistency commitment in support implementation policies is a key factor in the environmental performance of business entities.

"The new variable Green Leadership in the business world is also important to emerge as the elaboration of green economy, green industry, green technology and others policies that already have to be actualized in order to answer national and global challenges," he said.

PLN President Director, Darmawan Prasodjo, said the award would be used as an encouragement to continue to support the energy transition.

Therefore, he and PLN personnel expressed their gratitude for the appreciation given by the government.

"I am grateful for this appreciation. This award is a trigger for us to continue to contribute to the energy transition, reduce emissions and carry out environmentally friendly business processes," said Darmawan.

He said that in 2021, the electricity generation sector will produce emissions of 244 million tons of CO2e. Without intervention, by 2060 the emissions will reach more than 1 billion tons of CO2e per year.

"PLN is committed to reducing these emissions to zero in 2060 or net zero emissions. We are not doing this because of international agreements, not because of environmental regulations. But we are doing this because we do really care," said Darmawan.

To reduce emissions, PLN has removed 13.3 gigawatts (GW) of PLTU from planning.

This could reduce about 1.8 billion tons of CO2 in the next 25 years. PLN also replaces 1.8 GW PLTU with an EBT generator that operates as a baseload.

Another step is to reduce 800 MW of PLTU by gas plants that can reduce emissions by almost 50 percent. Not only that, as many as 1.3 GWs of PLTUs that have signed the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) have also been successfully terminated.

This can reduce emissions by around 175 million tons of CO2 in the next 25 years.

This year and in the future, PLN will no longer add to the construction of a new PLTU, but will actually plan to increase its EBT capacity by 20.9 GW until 2030 in the latest Electric Power Supply Business Plan (RUPTL).

This is the greenest RUPTL in Indonesian history.

He added that now all PLN plants do not only produce electricity, but also become the epicenter of environmental, social and community welfare improvements. The presence of PLN plants can not only be a source of electricity but also be able to move the wheels of the economy in the community.

As an innovation in the energy transition, PLN applies biomass co-firing to build a populist energy ecosystem. Until 2022, PLN has conducted this co-firing trial in 49 locations.

"We build people-based clean energy. From there, more than 800 thousand tons of carbon emissions are reduced in just 2 years," said Darmawan.

In the last five years, PLN has also consistently managed 100 percent of toxic and hazardous (B3) waste. PLN encourages waste utilization, building a new economic ecosystem to trigger circular economic growth.

PLN also continues to utilize the Fly Ash and Bottom Ash (FABA) from PLTU to drive the economy of the community and build village infrastructure around PLTU, such as road construction, bridges, paving for flood prevention, and tetrapod for abrasion prevention.

"FABA has succeeded in creating a new populist-based economy. Become a new business. Become a new tourist area. Tourists come. The economy moves. We also involve women as tourism managers," said Darmawan.

The PLN plant is also actively ensuring that the ecosystem around the generating area is well maintained.

The Biodiversity Index is maintained at level 2-3, meaning the ecosystem is stable/no pressure on the ecosystem.

This step is carried out by building captive animals in danger of extinction and planting mangroves.

"This year, mangrove planting has been carried out for 69 Ha, and we will continue to develop it until next year it reaches more than 150 Ha. We are all empowered," said Darmawan.

PLN also makes measurable efforts to use resources efficiently.

PLN monitors and evaluates the use of water and energy at the PLN Group's power plant through a digital dashboard. This is a beyond compliance activity as part of our commitment to ESG.

PLN's past task is to provide electricity, but in the future, our main job is to take care of the environment. We have to protect our environment. We build dreams throughout the archipelago. And in the process, we strengthen PLN, we strengthen the national capacity of the Indonesian nation," concluded Darmawan.

The series of plants that get Proper Gold are Steam Power Plants (PLTU), namely PLTU Tanjung Jati-B, PLTU Suralaya 1-7, PLTU Banten 1 Suralaya, PLTU Lontar, PLTU Pelabuhan Ratu, PLTU Paiton 1-2, PLTU Paiton 9, PLTU Indramayu and PLTU Rembang.

In addition, Gas and Steam Power Plants (PLTGU), namely PLTGU Tambak Lorok, PLTGU Perak Grati, PLTGU Priok and PLTGU Gresik also won the Gold Proper.

Then, the Pesanggaran Gas Diesel Power Plant (PLTDG) and the Kamojang Drajat Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) also received the Golden Award.
