JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) recommends building or strengthening schools in disaster-prone areas by using the design of a Healthy Simple Instant House (RISHA).

The Director General of Housing at the Ministry of PUPR, Iwan Suprijanto, said that since 2018 when the PUPR ministry was given the mandate to carry out school rehabilitation, he had recommended a prototype design for schools that would be resilient to disasters.

"In disaster-prone areas, we recommend earthquake-resistant designs, whether built by local governments or non-governmental funds. We recommend using earthquake-resistant designs," said Iwan in Cianjur, West Java, quoted from Antara, Sunday, December 11.

According to him, RISHA is not only used and built for residential areas, but also for the construction of public and social facilities such as schools.

Currently, the prototype of the school building with RISHA technology has been determined by a circular letter from the Director General of Human Settlements as a prototype design for the construction of earthquake-resistant schools.

One of them was when the Ministry of PUPR rehabilitated SDN Cibantala 1 in Munjul Village, Cilaku District, Cianjur Regency, West Java in 2021 using RISHA design technology.

"Incidentally, we have used RISHA technology, and Alhamdulillah it is relatively safe," said Iwan.

Previously, Spokesperson for the Ministry of PUPR Endra S Atmawidjaja said that based on information from the RISHA applicator team under the guidance of the Directorate General of Human Settlements at the Ministry of PUPR, school buildings using RISHA technology, they were still safe when the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.6 on November 21, 2022.

Endra said the location of the school in Cilaku District was Cugenang District which became the epicenter of the earthquake. There are two elementary schools built using RISHA technology, namely SD Kidang Kencana and SD Cibantala 1.

The condition of the structure and the entire building is safe from damage caused by the earthquake. Other schools that are built conventionally are indicated to be cracked quite badly.
