BOGOR - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) through the Directorate General of Water Resources (Ditjen SDA) stated that the construction of the Ciawi and Sukamahi Dams in Megamendung, Bogor Regency, West Java, has reached 93 percent.

"Now the progress of the Ciawi and Sukamahi Dams has reached 93 percent. It is hoped that this year it will be completed," said Director of River and Beach at the Directorate General of Natural Resources, Bob Arthur in a statement quoted by Antara, Thursday, December 8.

According to him, the first two dry dams in Indonesia are for flood control in Jakarta during the rainy season, because they are able to reduce the flow of water flowing from the Ciliwung River.

"This dam is an integrated system to control flooding in Jakarta with the function of reducing flooding in the Ciliwung River by 11.9 percent of the water discharge," explained Bob.

Ciawi Dam has a capacity volume of 6.05 million cubic meters and an inundation area of 39.4 hectares. The dam, which was built with a contract value of Rp798.7 billion, was able to reduce flooding by 111.75 cubic meters/second.

Meanwhile, Sukamahi Dam has a capacity of 1.68 million cubic meters and an inundation area of 5.23 hectares. The contract value for the construction is Rp464.93 billion and is able to reduce flooding by 15.47 cubic meters/second.

Bob said the Directorate General of Natural Resources continues to strive to prevent flooding throughout Indonesia. The efforts made are to build various infrastructures to control flooding.

According to him, the construction of flood control that has been carried out by the Directorate General of Natural Resources includes dams, river normalization, flood embankments, coastal embankments, Sabo dams, floatingway, Sudetan, retention ponds and polder systems.

"This flood driver is made in all areas that often experience flooding with a big impact and have a master plan," he said.

He said the construction of flood control was carried out to create a sense of security, safety of human souls and property, public facilities, and to maintain the wheels of the economy.

Since 2015 until now, the Directorate General of Natural Resources has recorded the construction of 38 dams, 2,972 kilometers of flood control and coastal safety, and 471 kilometers of sediment control.

"Not only in Ciawi, the Directorate General of Natural Resources also built flood control in Semarang City. Because, in that city, flooding occurs not only from overflowing river water but also caused by tidal waves from the sea," he explained.

In dealing with flooding in Semarang City, said Bob, the Directorate General of SDA has a Jatibarang Dam which can accommodate 20.4 million cubic meters, a 4.71 kilometer West Flood Canal, a 14.7 kilometer East Flood Canal and an integrated Sea Embankment for the Semarang-Demak toll road along 6.6 kilometers.

He explained that there were two packages for the construction of flood control and the Semarang Demak tidal wave. The first package consists of Normalization of the Babon River, Normalization of the Sayung River and Repair of the Ngepreh Drainage. The second package includes the Retention Pool and the Polder System and Pumps.

"In flood and tidal control in the Tambak Lorok area which has entered Phase II, the Directorate General of SDA is working on the Coastal Embankment and Polder System with a rob embankment length of 2,187 meters and a Retention Pond covering an area of 0.69 hectares," said Bob.
