PT PLN (Persero) cooperates with four companies to maintain the reliability of natural gas supply and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) for power generation fuel.

The four gas supplier companies are PT Medco E&P Indonesia, PT Medco E&P Tarakan, Husky CNOOC Madura Ltd and INPEX Masela Ltd.

President Director of PT PLN Energi Primer Indonesia, Iwan Agung Firstantara, said PLN had made a number of agreements with gas suppliers to ensure the supply of gas and LNG for safe plants.

"And this need will continue to increase because gas plays an important role in the energy transition," Iwan told the media, Tuesday, November 29.

He hopes that the commitment to the continuity of LNG's supply for electricity as a top priority can be maintained.

"PLN needs gas but at the same time, PLN also needs LNG infrastructure and pipelines," he said.

Meanwhile, the Director of Gas and Fuel of PT PLN Energy Primary Indonesia Rakhmad Dewanto added that PLN's gas consumption in 2011 is 800 billion thermal units per day (BBTUD). This consumption increased by 1,046 BBTUD in 2020 and is projected to increase by 1,300 BBTUD in 2023.

Rakhmad continued, future gas use will contribute 34 percent or equivalent to 3.4 billion cubic feet (BCF) of the total energy consumed by PLN plants in 2040.

"It will increase 3 times from now on, and will continue to rise. And will be replaced with renewable energy in 2060," he continued.

According to him, gas will play a very important role for PLN as intermediate energy in the energy transition.

Gas priority for the domestic market, especially PLN, is needed to ensure that gas/LNG as transition energy is able to meet the National Contribution target by 2030. And Net Zero Emission by 2060.

Director of Human Capital and Administration of PLN EPI Bagus Setiawan projects that in the future, LNG Gas will replace oil and coal as the base loader for PLN's generator.

"In the future, gas will be urgently needed to complement renewable energy as a leaker plant that operates at peak load times," he concluded.
