Sah! Jababeka Industrial Estate Becomes The First Net Zero Industrial Cluster In Southeast Asia

JAKARTA - Factory-factories in the Jababeka Industrial Estate in Cikarang are the first net zero industrial cluster in Southeast Asia. This is the concrete result of the Task Force Energy, Sustainability & Climate (TF ESC) B20 by encouraging collaboration for the first net zero industrial cluster in Southeast Asia.

The Jababeka factory group signed a joint statement and announced its plan to become the first net zero industrial cluster in the Jababeka Industrial Estate in Indonesia Net Zero Summit 2022, side event B20 Indonesia 2022.

This cluster will be supported by the World Economic Forum and Accenture as part of the "Transitioning Industrial Clusters towards Net Zero" initiative in collaboration with Accenture and EPRI. The factories include Pertamina, Hitachi, Unilever, and L'Oreal

After the signing, the Jababeka factory group plans to jointly develop a decarbonization solution in the Jababeka Industrial Estate. Where the target is to achieve net zero carbon emissions before 2050 to support Indonesia's net zero target by 2060.

Other main goals include increasing operational efficiency and circularity as well as a transition from fossil energy to solar-powered electrical energy, and other renewable sources. These goals will be part of the B20 energy transition effort that supports Indonesia's G20 presidency in 2022.

Managing Director of Jababeka Infrastruktur Agung Wicaksono said the Jababeka net zero industrial cluster will be built on the basis that has been placed as an industrial area for more than 30 years with companies from 30 countries transforming in the future, using technology and digital in its operations.

"This initiative will help companies in the largest industrial area in Southeast Asia to take a major role in overcoming the increasing demand for consumers for sustainable products and responsible business practices," he said in a written statement, Saturday, November 12.

Meanwhile, the President Director and CEO of Pertamina as well as Chair of the B20 Energy, Sustainability and Climate Change, Nicke Widyawati, added that increasing the use of renewable energy solutions is important to reduce carbon emissions from industrial activities. But achieving decarbonization requires collaboration between many stakeholders, so, we are looking for additional companies in Jababeka to join this new group.

"Pertamina, as the only Indonesian company Fortune Global 500, really wants to encourage this decarbonization journey as an energy company," said Nicke.

Director of Supply Chain Unilever Indonesia, Alper Kulak, added, sustainability must be an important part of every business strategy to provide superior and sustainable and responsible performance. Unilever hopes to partner with other parties in this manufacturing business ecosystem, in this effort.

Director of Operational Factory L'Oreal Indonesia,IDEet Verma, said that considering the company's position as a leader (industrial market share) of beauty and representation of a global brand, L'Oreal is committed to taking on greater responsibility.

"Through L'Oreal For the Future, we are committed to achieving 100 percent carbon neutrality, all of our locations are in 2025 globally," he said.

President Director of Hitachi Astemo Bekasi Manufacturing, Yasuhiro Yamamoto, added that the launch of the 1248kWp roof solar PV installation at the factory in October was the largest currently in one building within the Jababeka Industrial Estate, Hitachi Astemo seeks to accelerate the transition to net zero industrial clusters.
