Minister Trenggono Has Prepared A Blue Economy Program To Achieve The NDC Target

JAKARTA - Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono prepared the Blue Economy Program to contribute to achieving the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target as an effort to curb the pace of global climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions. "Climate change is currently affecting all countries, disrupting the national economy, harming the people, communities, and is believed to be getting worse in the future. In the marine sector, Indonesia through the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries is preparing a blue economy program as a contribution to the NDC," said Minister Trenggono in a written statement in Jakarta, quoted from Antara, Monday, November 7. The NDC is a document containing the commitment and climate action of a country communicated to the world through the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Minister Trenggono at the opening of the Indonesian Pavilion at the 27th UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP) in Sharm el-Sheikh City, Egypt, said Indonesia was committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from its original target of 29 percent to 31.89 percent unconditionally, and from a 41 percent target to 43.20 percent with international assistance. The Blue Economy program in question, continued Trenggono, includes the expansion of marine conservation areas as a blue carbon ecosystem, implementation of quota-based measurable fishing policies, development of environmentally friendly sea, coastal and land cultivation, as well as structuring of coastal management and small islands to avoid damage due to high economic activity. Trenggono is optimistic that the implementation of the Blue Economy Program will be able to withstand the pace of climate change, through the presence of a healthy and sustainable marine and fisheries ecosystem. "Protecting the blue carbon ecosystem in closed conservation areas, limiting fishing fleets, low-emission cultivation activities, and protecting the sea, coastal and small islands are concrete contributions to reducing greenhouse gas emissions," he said. Meanwhile, the Indonesian Pavilion in the 27th COP of UNFCCC in Egypt raised the theme Stronger Climate Actions or Stronger Climate Actions Together. This is in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals number 13 with a mandate for the global community to take immediate action in fighting climate change and its impacts. The Indonesian Pavilion facilitates parties representing countries and non-states, to share experiences, discuss issues and practices, and provide inspiration for climate action. "We invite every nation to work together to save this earth and share the same goals. We are also open to receiving input on what we have achieved and are ready to take action, go further and be bolder for our earth," he said. The 27th COP takes place from 6 to 18 November 2022 followed by hundreds of countries participating in the Climate Change Framework Convention or UNFCCC.
