YOGYAKARTA - Profile Boenjamin Setiawan or dr. Boenjamin Setiawan, Ph.D. who is often called by dr. Boen is a doctor and the richest entrepreneur in Indonesia.

He is the voter of a leading pharmaceutical company in Indonesia, namely PT. Kalbe Farma. Benjamin Setiawan was born under the name Khouw Liep Boen in Tegal, Central Java on September 27, 1933.

dr. Boenjamin Setiawan, Ph.D. started teaching elementary school in Tegal, after graduating from elementary school, he moved to Jakarta to continue teaching his junior high and high school.

After graduating from high school, Boenjamin Setiawan then continued his teaching at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia and graduated as a doctor in 1958. Boenjamin Setiawan then continued his teaching abroad at the University of California. There he got a Ph.D. degree with a dissertation entitled The Inhibition of Alcohol Dehydrogenate by Chlor Promazine, an Other Phcnothiazinc Derivative.

In 1958, Boenjamin Setiawan became an assistant lecturer on his campus, then he became a lecturer. In 1980 Boenjamin became the Chancellor of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia.

In 1963, Boenjamin Setiawan tried to do business by establishing PT Farmindo with a number of his colleagues, but his company was only able to last for three years. The cause of the failure was the lack of experience in marketing or marketing. Boenjamin and his partner were able to produce medicinal products but failed to distribute them.

Establishing PT Kalbe Farma

After experiencing a failure, on September 10, 1966 dr. Boen again tried to establish his own business with his brothers, Khouw Lip Lebih, Khouw Lip Swan and Kliouw Lip Bing, and his best friend Jan Tan who is a pharmacologist.

Then, dr. Boen founded a pharmaceutical company called Kalbe Farma. Boenjamin was appointed as President Director. He started this business from the garage of a house in Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta.

The important element of the success of the Boenjamin Setiawan business is the right time alternative. At that time, the New Order led by Suharto easily gave permission to foreign pharmaceutical factories to invest in Indonesia.

All you need to know, at that time pharmaceutical products from foreign pharmaceutical factories were expensive while domestic pharmaceutical products were relatively cheap. With this difference, Kalbe Farma, Boenjamin Setiawan, tried to enter in the middle, their position was between foreign and local pharmaceutical factories.

Kalbe Farma's first product was biopsenton, which is a wound bidder. Then another product of Kalbe Farma that was successfully marketed, namely Kalpanax, which is an OTC product. Because at that time many Indonesians suffered from panu disease, therefore marketing was originally initiated by doctors because Kalpanax was really effective in eradicating panu disease.

When Kalbe Farma's company was still small, Boenjamin Setiawan tried to optimize its own products. When the company started to grow up, he started to delegate it to other people.

Boen along with his Kalbe Group, he oversees some companies. Not only in the pharmaceutical sector, but also in other fields. Such as: Kalman's book stall (1976), PT Tatas Mulia (1978, a subsidiary food producer company), PT Dankos Laboratories (medium company), PT Igar Jaya (cavity company), PT Bank Arta Media (cooperation with Kompas Grainedia), PT Enseval (distribution). Part of the products optimized by Kalbe Farma include Promag, Woods, Neuralgin, Mixagrip, Comix, Extra Joss and Prenagen. In 2008, his position in Kalbe was replaced by his nephew, total Ruth Irawati Setiady.

As a well-known pharmaceutical company in Indonesia, PT Kalbe Farma recorded revenues of 14 trillion rupiah. According to Forbes magazine, currently the total wealth is dr. Boen made $3.3 billion, or about 44 trillion rupiah, so he is included in the list of the 10 richest people in Indonesia in 2013 by occupying the 7th position.
