JAKARTA - The government through the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is said to continue to seek to strengthen cooperation in the trade in fishery products with Russian authorities.

Secretary General of the KKP Antam Novambar said that through this strategy, the Republic of Indonesia is targeting an increase in exports to the Eastern European country.

"Indonesia has leading fisheries commodities that can fill the needs of Russian fisheries markets such as shrimp and seaweed," he said in an official statement from Saint Petersburg, released Sunday, September 25.

According to Antam, in the bilateral meeting, Indonesia encouraged a wider agreement to be realized so that documents could be signed on the sidelines of the G20 activities in Bali in November.

Meanwhile, Plt. The Director General of Strengthening the Competitiveness of Marine and Fishery Products, Ishartini, said that in recent years Russia has become one of the potential markets for the export of Indonesian fishery products.

"We will facilitate exploring the export opportunities for Indonesian fishery products needed by the Russian fishing industry," he said.

On the same occasion, the Russian delegation led by Shestakov said it would support this collaboration through the implementation of satellite surveillance of fishing vessels owned.

"We can explore further cooperation regarding the transfer of surveillance satellite development technology because it is very much needed in implementing a measurable fishing policy based on quotas," he said.

Previously, the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, also instructed his staff to continue to improve the export performance of fishery products. Minister Trenggono also continues to develop superior commodities to support the export performance of Indonesian fisheries.
