BPS: Four Cities In South Sulawesi Experiencing Deflation

MAKASSAR - Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of South Sulawesi (Sulsel) Suntono said four of the five cities that became data collection samples experienced deflation and the deepest were in Watampone City with minus 0.69 percent.

"There are five cities that are sample data collection and that represents 24 regencies and cities in South Sulawesi. For August 2022, there are four that are deflation and one other city is inflation," Suntono said as quoted by Antara, Monday, September 2.

Suntono said the other three cities that experienced deflation were Makassar City (-0.29 percent), Bulukumba (-0.60 percent), and Parepare City (-0.11 percent), while Palopo City inflation was 0.26 percent.

He stated that cumulatively South Sulawesi experienced a deflation of 0.27 percent or a decrease in the Consumer Price Index (IHK) from 112.31 in July 2022 to 112.00 in August 2022.

He explained that the deflation occurred due to a significant decrease in prices in three expenditure groups, namely the food, beverage and tobacco group at 0.81 percent.

Then the health group was 0.01 percent, and the transportation group was 1.02 percent.

Meanwhile, eight other groups experienced inflation, namely clothing and footwear group at 0.32 percent, housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuel groups at 0.16 percent.

Then the household equipment, equipment, and routine maintenance group amounted to 0.33 percent, information, communication, and financial services groups by 0.02 percent, and recreation, sports, and culture groups by 0.07 percent.

In addition, education groups amounted to 0.01 percent, food and beverage supply groups/restaurants by 0.13 percent, and personal care groups and other services by 0.13 percent.

The commodities that make inflation donations to this group are cacalang fish, kites, broiler eggs, packaged water, household assistant wages, kale, electricity rates, white cabbage, carrots and sweet corn.

Meanwhile, the balancers or commodities experiencing deflation are shallots, air transportation, cayenne pepper, cooking oil, broiler meat, red chilies, tempeh, tomatoes, acid, and gold jewelry.

The inflation rate for the calendar year in the province was 3.79 percent and the year-on-year inflation rate (August 2022 to August 2021) was 5.03 percent.
