JAKARTA – The BRI Liga 1 football competition, which has entered its second season in this pandemic era, is expected to have a better economic impact than before.

This assumption was conveyed by the Head of Business Climate Studies of the University of Indonesia's Institute for Economic and Community Research (LPEM UI) Mohamad Dian Revindo in his latest report.

According to him, the economic prospect could even exceed the competition period before the pandemic.

"I see the economic impact could exceed IDR 2.7 trillion as before the pandemic. This is because the enthusiasm of the audience and fans remains high. People's mobility is gradually returning to normal and the TV entertainment business and digital channels are getting stronger," he said in a written statement quoted on Thursday, August 4th.

Dian added, another basic assessment refers to the projection of economic growth this year which is at the level of 5 percent.

This figure far exceeds the realization of 2021 which at that time was perched at the level of 3.7 percent.

"This indirectly indicates that people's purchasing power is starting to recover. This recovery of purchasing power is accompanied by a strong desire for travel and entertainment, where soccer matches can be one of the popular alternatives," he said.

Furthermore, Dian explained that the economic prospects of football are highly dependent on controlling the new variant of the COVID-19 pandemic, booster vaccinations, public mobility policies and the effectiveness of public communication on related policies.

"And don't forget the effectiveness of coordination between the security forces and the match organizers and clubs is very decisive in the ongoing football match," he asserted.
