JAKARTA - PT PLN (Persero) presented the company's strategic plan in achieving the Net Zero Emission (NZE) target in 2060.
PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo in his presentation said that in the energy transition, PLN has a project roadmap that will run from 2021 to 2060.
PLN also maps out a number of cooperation opportunities to support the achievement of NZE 2060.
"We have strategic steps that must be taken to provide a better living space for future generations. PLN's vision in the future is not only to provide reliable electricity for the community, but also to distribute green energy that is environmentally friendly," said Darmawan in an official statement, Friday, July 15.
He said PLN's plan to develop new and renewable energy plants (EBT) has been stated in the Business Plan for the Provision of Electricity (RUPTL) 2021-2030.
In this Green RUPTL, the portion of the addition of EBT-based power plants is around 51.6 percent until 2030.
Last year, PLN had built a 623 megawatt (MW) EBT plant, the majority of which were hydroelectric power plants (PLTA).
According to Darmawan, in 2022 PLN will increase the installed capacity of EBT by 228 MW.
As for the details, namely, geothermal power plants (PLTP) will operate 45 MW, PLTA and micro hydro power plants (PLTM) will increase by 178 MW, and bioenergy power plants by 5 MW.
"Not only intensifying the construction of EBT power plants, PLN is also paralleling the scenario of retiring the steam power plant (PLTU) in stages until 2056," said Darmawan.
In addition to retiring the PLTU, PLN is also using ultra-supercritical technology and co-firing on the PLTU which is currently still operating. The co-firing will be implemented in 52 PLTUs.
Darmawan said PLN is also running a dedieselization program through the conversion of diesel power plants (PLTD) in remote areas to EBT-based power plants through a hybrid scheme.
Other programs prepared by PLN to support the energy transition are gas expansion, development of electricity storage technology in the form of large batteries, to carbon and hydrogen capture technology. PLN also continues to improve energy efficiency and reduce grid losses.
To succeed in all efforts to support Carbon Neutral 2060, at least PLN needs a minimum of 500 billion US dollars.
"The key is collaboration. PLN is open to working together both in terms of investment, financial funds, and technology sharing to realize all these plans," said Darmawan
So far, PLN has obtained financial support from a number of international banks in supporting the construction of environmentally friendly power plants. One of them is funding support from a syndicate of three international banks, namely Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), Societe Generale and Standard Chartered Bank to build the Cirata Solar Power Plant (PLTS) which is the largest floating PLTS in Southeast Asia with a capacity of 145 MWAc.
PLN also received funding of USD 380 million from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), which is part of the World Bank Group for the Upper Cisokan hydropower project through the Subsidiary Loan Agreement (SLA) scheme.
"We are grateful that in the midst of a difficult period of liquidity and the loan market, PLN has succeeded in achieving cost efficiency by implementing a structure designed to attract international creditors," added Darmawan.
