Viral Sexual Harassment On Trains, KAI Blacklists Perpetrators: This Step Is Taken To Provide A Sense Of Security For Customers

JAKARTA - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) will refuse and blacklist passengers who have sexually harassed passengers while on a train journey.

EVP Corporate Secretary of KAI Asdo Artriviyanto said this policy was implemented to provide a deterrent effect and prevent perpetrators from doing the same thing in the future.

"KAI absolutely does not tolerate this incident and hopes that similar incidents will not happen again in various other KAI services," Asdo said in his statement, quoted from Antara, Tuesday, June 21.

Asdo said the blacklist was a firm measure by KAI to prevent sexual harassment on trains. This policy also applies to perpetrators of sexual harassment whose case went viral yesterday.

KAI has contacted the victim to apologize for the inconvenience experienced and is ready to provide legal support for the steps that will be taken.

"The victim did not intend to take this matter to court and only asked the alleged perpetrator to apologize and would not repeat his actions again," he said.

Based on video evidence and available reports, KAI will blacklist the relevant Population Identification Number (NIK) so that it cannot use KAI's services.

Officers will remind regarding the importance of maintaining politeness towards fellow passengers, the consequences of acts of sexual harassment, and remind them to immediately report behavior that makes passengers uncomfortable.

KAI will also increase supervision and security so as not to provide opportunities for perpetrators to carry out their intentions.

"Hopefully the various steps that KAI has taken can continue to provide a sense of security and comfort for customers while using KAI's services," he said.

Head of the Advocacy and Community Affairs Division of the Indonesian Transportation Society (MTI) Djoko Setijowarno said his party supports KAI which will blacklist perpetrators through the relevant NIK.

This is to provide a deterrent effect to perpetrators of sexual violence on public transportation. KAI is also expected to coordinate with the Directorate General of Dukcapil, Ministry of Home Affairs and Komnas Perempuan.

Meanwhile, the Daily Chairperson of the Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI) Tulus Abadi suggested prioritizing mediation steps related to solving the problem. This is done to prevent the incident from happening again in the future.

KAI must also conduct socialization in various KAI services regarding the provisions governing sexual violence, both in the Criminal Code and Law Number 12 of 2022 concerning the Crime of Sexual Violence which regulates the actions of a person with the intention of degrading a person's dignity and is threatened with imprisonment. a maximum of 4 (four) years and/or a maximum fine of Rp. 50,000,000.
