JAKARTA - The government through the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) is said to be exploring opportunities for cooperation with a technology company from the United States (US) Qualcomm. The cooperation is related to the development of the semiconductor industry in Indonesia.
Minister of Industry (Menperin) Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said this step was an effort to support the acceleration of digitalization in the automotive industry. In addition, it is also to open opportunities for the involvement of small industries in the industrial chain.
"We all know that during the pandemic, there has been a massive increase in internet penetration in Indonesia, making the potential for developing connectivity-supporting products absolutely absolute," he said in an official statement quoted on Saturday, May 28.
According to the Minister of Industry, his party is currently also building an ecosystem or information and communication technology (ICT) products such as laptops and tablets.
"For this reason, we assess that Qualcomm's support is important to assist the government in ensuring that all processes and plans are carried out properly," he said.
Furthermore, the Minister of Industry explained the need for companies that are able to supply chips which are one of the components in the product.
Therefore, the Minister of Industry invites Qualcomm as one of the leaders in chip production to take part in this effort.
“The recent shortage of chips shows that the world is accelerating to become more and more digitized. Therefore, in building a more advanced digital world, investment support is needed," he said.
The Minister of Industry added that Indonesia is currently building the Indonesia Manufacturing Center which will become the center for developing the latest manufacturing technology for Indonesia.
"Through this meeting, we hope that Qualcomm can provide assistance in the development of the Indonesia Manufacturing Center," he said.
In the previous VOI report, the government through the Coordinating Minister for the Economy (Menko) of Indonesia Airlangga Hartarto is also known to be exploring with the Netherlands regarding investment opportunities in the semiconductor industry in Indonesia.
It is known that Coordinating Minister Airlangga had just met with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on the sidelines of the 2022 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting (WEFAM) agenda in Davos-Switzerland.
