JAKARTA - PT PLN (Persero), PT Pertamina (Persero), and PT Pupuk Indonesia (Persero) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to create a Green Industry Cluster or green cluster for energy supply through the development of green hydrogen and green ammonia.

Through this collaboration, PLN will build an energy storage system to overcome the excess power that is currently happening in Indonesia.

Deputy Minister of SOEs I Pahala Mansury said this cooperation was also to overcome the problem of excess electricity supply experienced by PLN.

"Currently PLN is experiencing an extraordinary oversupply of electricity so that later it can be transferred to Pupuk Indonesia," he said.

Furthermore, Pahala said, excess electrical energy from PLN can be managed into friendly hydrogen, so that it can produce cleaner energy and can be used for factory and refinery operations.

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said at the end of this year in Java there was an additional supply of around six gigawatts (GW) of electricity, while the additional demand or demand was only about 800 megawatts (MW) which caused a difference of five GW.

This collaboration is in line with the government's commitment to reducing carbon emissions and encouraging the acceleration of the energy transition from fossil fuels to new and renewable energy (EBT).

On the same occasion, Pertamina President Director Nicke Widyawati said Pertamina fully supports Pupuk Indonesia's plan to create environmentally friendly fertilizer products.

"The use of energy from green hydrogen and ammonia has already started at the Ulubelu PLTP, Plaju refinery, Dumai, and Cilacap," he said.

President Director of Pupuk Indonesia Bakir Pasaman explained that in the medium term, his party will cooperate with Pertamina to utilize non-productive wells for the production of green and blue ammonia.

"The green industry cluster as a result of the collaboration of the three SOEs will develop renewable energy, apply carbon capture and storage technology (CCUS), and reduce the use of primary energy which is high in emissions," he concluded.
