Mexican President's Son Accused Of Using Corruption Proceeds To Rent A House In Texas

JAKARTA - Mexican President Manuel Lopez Obrador asked his son to explain how his son works to earn money, amid a commotion over property allegedly rented by his son and daughter-in-law in Texas. Obrador made this request on Friday (11/2), when he denied there was a conflict of interest. The non-profit group Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity and news media Latinus reported in January that the couple had rented a house from a company executive from 2019 to 2020. The company in question did business with Mexico's state-owned oil company Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex ) During the press conference, Obrador stated that there was no conflict of interest in this matter. He also said none of his children had anything to do with government business. However, Obrador said he hoped that his son in question, Jose Ramon Lopez Beltran, would shed some light on "how he works to earn money." According to various media reports, the Texas home is owned by a former executive at the US oil company Baker Hughes Co, with which Pemex has been doing business for a long time.

The executive said he did not know who he rented his house to, according to news outlet Bloomberg. Baker Hughes could not be reached for comment. Meanwhile, Pemex Chief Executive Octavio Romero told the press this week that no violations had occurred with the US company. He also said the most important years Baker Hughes did business with Pemex were during previous administrations.
